The Fabric Store ‘Little Black Dress’ Fashion Hack Tutorial

After an overwhelming response to the fashion hack I did on The Fabric Stores Little Black Dress for charity, I decided to create a video tutorial and free downloadable pattern so that you can make one at home too!

I purchased my two dresses for $25 each, and $7 from each dress will support Orange Sky – a Brisbane Charity that helps to positively connect people experiencing homelessness through free laundry, showers and conversation.

This hack is pretty simple and is suitable for beginners to established sewers. It involves first hemming the maxi dress and transforming it into a cocktail length. Next, you use the excess fabric from the hem to create two ruffles which are then topstiched onto the dress. Piece of cake!

I’ve created a free downloadable PDF pattern of the shoulder frill right here –  Shoulder Frill Pattern

This dress is so cool and the sleeves are adorable! I definitely have been one who’s bought something that I loved but wasn’t quite right, taken it home, and never worn it. But learning more about how to alter my clothes to take something less than perfect and turn it into exactly what I want has been a game changer. I want to give a shout-out to the company I work for, Texture Clothing. We are a small label that designs and manufactures our clothing using hemp and organic cotton here in the U.S. We also strive toward zero waste, so we have a few products designed to use our scraps, but we also sell our scraps to crafty folks who make stellar projects with them (like yours!), and we also donate scraps to certain local businesses that can use them.
Thanks for this tutorial, I’ll definitely be giving it a try!
