People Over Profit was written by entrepreneur and co-founder of Sevenly – Dale Partridge. The book explores a fresh and fast emerging business model rooted in social responsibility, rejecting current profit-driven businesses as out-dated and instead painting a picture of a ‘compassionate economy’ in which consumers use their purchasing power to create social impact. Gone are the days of doing business purely to make money, instead Partridge shares his own business insights in order to teach readers (entrepreneurs, business owners, start ups) how to build the foundations of their businesses using their own core values.
I enjoyed the mix of real life business examples (good, bad and damn ugly) dotted throughout the book as well as the exploration of ‘The 4 Eras of Organisational Behaviour’ – a cycle in which most businesses start out as honest, then efficient, leading to deceptive and then apologetic.
What most impressed me was that the core reasons for this new socially conscious business model are not just because of the financial success it can bring, but because it’s what we SHOULD be doing. Turning to business as a resource for world-changing as opposed to purely money-making resonates with my inner calling, and it’s inspiring to see leaders like Dale Partridge out there on the front lines, shaking shit up.
A relatively short read at 218 pages, even for a slow reader like myself it can be knocked over in a weekend or two. Inspiring, insightful and informative, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to learn about socially responsible business as well as current or future business owners.
